Why do we walk through on dry ground in salvation—by our own works or by Christ?

We walk through on dry ground not by our own works or anything we have done or deserve, but entirely because of what Christ has done for us. Salvation is by grace through faith, not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, pictured by God opening the Red Sea.

Les teaches that Israel at the Red Sea was locked in with nothing they could do, and Moses said, “Stand still, and see the salvation of God.” That pictures the believer: we were children of wrath, dead, hopeless, and helpless. But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us, quickened us together with Christ. Les emphasizes that Paul does not say “but you” or “but I,” but “But God.” So we walk through on dry ground not by anything we have done or deserve, but all because of what Christ has done for us. It is by grace we are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not works.
