Les Feldick Bible Study

Where did Israel travel after leaving Goshen, and where were they trapped by the sea?

After leaving Goshen, Israel traveled down the shoreline of the Red Sea, avoiding the shorter Philistine route. They were trapped somewhere along the deeper part of that body of water, locked in by mountains, where God had directed them rather than the way of the Philistines.

Les explains that God did not lead Israel through the way of the Philistines, which would have been the short route. Instead, they came out of Goshen and traveled down the shore of the Red Sea. Somewhere along the deeper part of that body of water, with Mount Sinai approximately in that area, they would be locked in with mountains.

Exodus 13:18

But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea: and the children of Israel went up harnessed out of the land of Egypt.

Exodus 14:2

Speak unto the children of Israel, that they turn and encamp before Pihahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, over against Baalzephon: before it shall ye encamp by the sea.

At the Red Sea the Israelites were boxed in: the sea in front of them, forbidding mountains to the right, populated areas to the left, and Pharaoh's army with his chariots coming in from behind.
