What was Israel's situation at the Red Sea when the Egyptians were chasing them?

Israel was trapped at the Red Sea: the Egyptians pursued from behind with chariots, the sea lay ahead, mountains stood to the right, and populated areas likely to the left. Their situation appeared completely hopeless, and the people were frightened. Moses told them, 'Fear ye not,' and 'Stand still.'

Les explains that in the last program Israel was left down on the shores of the Red Sea. The Egyptians were now coming in behind them with the chariots. The Red Sea was in front of them, the mountains were to the right, and populated areas probably to the left. Everything seemed hopeless. Les says to put yourself in their shoes; no wonder they were scared stiff. Then in Exodus 14:13 Moses says, 'Fear ye not,' and the next two words are 'Stand still.' Les asks how those people must have thought under those circumstances, and then have their leaders say, 'Stand still.'

Exodus 14:13

And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.
