Why does the Holy Spirit indwell us and what happens to the old body?
The Holy Spirit indwells believers to serve as the Paraclete, the Comforter of John 14, while the old body remains subject to death, sickness, and failure. Though the soul and spirit belong to the Lord, the physical body still experiences mortality; the believer can be absent from the body and present with the Lord.
Les teaches that the Holy Spirit is indwelling us to be that paraclete of John 14, the Comforter. The soul and spirit are the Lord's, but the old body is still thrown to death and sickness and failure. Paul was confident and willing rather to be absent from the body and present with the Lord, yet he knew there was unfinished business: people still to be reached with the gospel. He labored because his life was not his own.
