Are we indwelt by the Holy Spirit now, or only in eternity?
Believers are indwelt by the presence of the Holy Spirit even now, but not to the degree that will be true in the eternal state. In this physical existence life is in the blood, while in the eternal state of flesh and bone the Spirit Himself will take over that life-giving role.
Les explains that even now, of course, we are indwelt by the presence of the Holy Spirit, but not to the degree that it will be in our eternal state. Drawing on 1 Corinthians 15, he notes that flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom, but only flesh and bone, so a life-giving substance must keep that eternal body functioning—the Spirit, the Spirit of God Himself. When we come into the eternal state of flesh and bone, the Spirit will actually take over the role that the blood now has. Life is in the blood in this physical existence, and in the eternal existence life is going to be in the Spirit. Les points out that this profound doctrine of resurrection comes out of the very letter written to carnal believers, the most carnal congregation Paul dealt with, whom he had to feed with milk rather than strong meat.
