Les Feldick Bible Study

Why did the Holy Spirit allow Paul to write deep truth to a carnal church?

The Holy Spirit prompted Paul to write deep truth to the carnal church because it was not too much for them to handle. This deep material is for every believer, even babes in Christ. God does not want believers to remain fleshly but to become spiritual and enjoy the knowledge of God.

Les explains that I Corinthians chapter 3 is addressed to people who were carnal, fleshly, and babes in Christ. Paul says he could not speak to them as spiritual but as carnal; he fed them milk, not meat, because they were not able to bear it. Yet Les emphasizes that the Holy Spirit would not have prompted Paul to write such deep truth to a carnal church if it were too much for them to handle. It is therefore here for every believer, even babes in Christ. Les also notes that God does not want people to remain fleshly and carnal; He wants them spiritual and enjoying the knowledge of God. The passage closes with the question whether one is a shame to God through biblical ignorance or a good and faithful servant.

1 Corinthians 3:1

And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.
