Why did Paul write to the Corinthian believers who were still carnal and babes in Christ?

Paul wrote to the Corinthians to prevent discouragement, reminding them that although they were carnal and still babes in Christ, they labored together with the Eternal Sovereign God. God wants to use every believer, weak or strong, because they are His husbandry and building, owned by the redemption price of His shed blood.

Les explains that Paul writes to these Corinthians so they will not become discouraged. Yes, they are carnal and still babes in Christ, but Paul directs their attention to who they are laboring with: the Eternal Sovereign God, even though they are carnal. You do not have to be the great spiritual giant that some theologians seem to be in our eyes in order to do the work God has for us. God wants to use every last one of us, whether weak and a babe, maybe a little carnal, or further up the ladder and more spiritual than average. Paul says, “we are labourers together.” He then says, “You are God’s husbandry. You are God’s building.” The possessive term is with God; He owns everything, not just the cattle on a thousand hills. He owns us by virtue of the redemption price of His shed blood. It is the preaching of the cross that gets people into this position, and nothing else will do. As believers in the finished work of the cross, God is our partner and overseer over everything we say, think, and do. We are His workmanship, His husbandry, and God’s building.
