Why was the Corinthian church's communion service wrong?

The Corinthian communion service was wrong because they partook with a wrong attitude, approaching the Lord’s table in revelry while harboring enmity and bitterness toward fellow believers. Paul taught that such unworthy participation brought condemnation, and God chastised them with sickness and weakness.

Les explains that partaking unworthily means coming to the Lord’s table with the wrong attitude. The Corinthians were going in almost with an attitude of revelry, totally wrong. Many also had a real thing against someone across the room, perhaps someone they had taken to a court of law, and their enmity was just like sparks. Paul says that will not work; you cannot take the Lord’s table with that kind of attitude. So he says examine yourself. Since the Corinthians were guilty of so many things that should have kept them from partaking, many were sick and weakly among them. In other words, God was already chastising them by taking away their health, and many were asleep.
