Why couldn't the Corinthians receive the impact of the Lord's Supper?
The Corinthians could not receive its impact because they abused the Lord's Supper by indulging in food and getting half drunk on too much wine. Their irreverent behavior turned a solemn remembrance of Christ's death and resurrection into self-centered feasting, so Paul told them to eat and drink at home and treat the Lord's house solemnly.
Les explains that the Lord's Supper is only for reminding yourself that Christ died, His blood was shed, and He arose from the dead. It is to be a solemn experience. But the Corinthians were abusing this beautiful picture by their indulgence with food and getting half drunk on too much wine, so how could they receive the impact of such a solemn service? Paul had to upbraid them, saying, 'Stop it. You do your eating and your drinking in your home, but when you come to the Lord's house for the Lord's Supper, it is a solemn occasion.' Les also notes that when they do this, they show the Lord's death until He comes, and verse 27 warns that whoever eats this bread and drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily is guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. Therefore a person must examine himself, not the next person or the one across the church, but look at his own heart and ask, 'Am I right with the Lord?'
When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s supper.
