Why couldn't the Corinthians get drunk or full on the Lord's Supper itself?
The Lord's Supper itself consisted only of a small piece of unleavened bread and a little cup of grape juice or wine. That amount could not satisfy physical hunger or cause drunkenness. The Corinthians were actually eating a large potluck supper beforehand, which led to the excess.
Les explains that in every denomination he visited, the Lord's Supper is nothing more than a piece of unleavened bread and a little cup of grape juice or wine. That is not enough to satisfy physical hunger or to get drunk. So what was going on? They were having a great big potluck supper before they had the Lord's Supper. People brought whatever they felt qualified to bring, put it on the table, and everybody ate. That potluck meal, not the Lord's Supper itself, caused the drunkenness and hunger Paul addressed.
When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s supper.
