How did the Corinthians abuse the Lord's Supper?

The Corinthians abused the Lord's Supper by their indulgence with food and by getting half drunk on too much wine. They treated a solemn service as an occasion for eating and drinking, so Paul upbraided them and told them to do their eating and drinking at home, not at the Lord's house.

Les explains that the Corinthians were abusing this beautiful picture in types by their indulgence with food and getting half drunk on too much wine. He notes that this made it impossible for them to receive the impact of such a solemn service, so Paul had to upbraid them and tell them, "Stop it." They were to do their eating and drinking in their home, but when they came to the Lord's house for the Lord's Supper, it was a solemn occasion. The purpose of the Lord's Supper is to remind oneself that Christ died, His blood was shed, and He arose from the dead, and it shows the Lord's death until He comes. Paul also said a person must examine himself, not the next person or someone across the church, but look at his own heart and attitude before the Lord.
