What is the spiritual condition of most people on the highways?
The spiritual condition of most people on the highways is lost. As one observes the constant traffic and masses of humanity coming and going, the realization is that most of them are lost. Their need is salvation, and believers should burn for them as Paul did, rather than seeming indifferent.
Les teaches that he becomes most aware of the masses of humanity when he is on the road. He describes the constant rolling of traffic into the city and out, and says it is the same everywhere. Highways are full of people coming and going. That is when he is struck by the masses, and by the thought that most of them are lost. He adds that they are lost, and we could care less seemingly. He wishes believers could be like Paul and just burn, because Paul's whole desire everywhere he went was that lost people might be saved. He notes that if every believer burned for the lost world like Paul, the world could still be turned around, but believers will not do it, and it is all in God's providence.
