What should we do with our physical appetites according to Jesus' temptation?
Physical appetites are to be tempered by spiritual things and kept subordinate to God's Word. When tempted to satisfy hunger by making bread, Jesus replied that man does not live by bread alone but by every word from God's mouth. We must keep priorities straight, not upside down.
Les teaches that Jesus had been in the wilderness forty days fasting, which was a perfect setup for the temptations. The devil came realizing He was hungry and tempted Him to command stones to be made bread, appealing to the desire to satisfy hunger. Jesus answered, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” The lesson is that in spite of our physical appetites, whatever they are, we must temper them with spiritual things that are far more important. Les stresses that we have to keep our priorities straight, because many people mean well but get their priorities upside down.
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
