How did Jesus answer Satan after being tempted to satisfy His hunger?

Jesus answered Satan by quoting Scripture, declaring that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. He met the temptation with the written Word rather than relying on bread to satisfy His hunger.

Les explains that Satan targeted Christ's hunger by mentioning bread, much like the sight or aroma of food can trigger a hungry person's appetite. Christ was genuinely hungry, yet as both God and man He did not let His fleshly desire dictate His response. Les teaches that Jesus answered in verse 4 by saying, 'It is written,' meaning He went back to the Word. The same principle holds for believers today: the way to maintain guard against the evil one is to stay in the Book, being washed by the cleansing of the Word. Jesus confronted Satan by quoting Scripture: 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.'

Matthew 4:4

But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Deuteronomy 8:3

And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.
