What happens when young people don't know the biblical promises about marriage?

When young people do not know the biblical promises about marriage, they enter the relationship with no commitment, no moral foundation, and no anchor. They take marriage lightly, and many expect it to end in divorce within a year or two. This lack of teaching leads to trouble.

Les teaches that when young people do not understand these biblical promises, it is because the Church has failed to teach them. He says the promises of marriage, sex, and kids are completely unknown to them. Consequently, they can enter marriage with no commitment, no moral foundation, and no anchor. Les cites a recent poll showing over 50% of just-married young couples expected their marriage to end in divorce within the first year or two. He finds that shocking, but it shows they take marriage lightly. By contrast, the biblical concept has never changed from the Garden of Eden: God intended one man married for life to one woman. If death interrupted it, they were free to remarry, but otherwise God's original plan was one man for one woman. He also notes that even the taunters of Jesus brought up Moses granting a writing of divorcement.
