If we are not under the law, how do we still keep it?

We keep it not by being under the law's demands, but by the Holy Spirit's control. The Spirit never leads a believer contrary to the law; He leads, guides, and directs us so that we keep the law, under grace rather than fear, in newness of spirit.

Les explains that Paul, being a Jew himself, writes that believers should serve in newness of spirit and not in the oldness of the letter. We are no longer under the demands of the Ten Commandments of Moses; we are now under the control of the Holy Spirit. Logically, the Holy Spirit will never lead a believer to do something contrary to the law, such as adultery or idolatry. Without the burden of the law and the fear of breaking it, we now have grace, and the Holy Spirit leads, guides, and directs us so that we keep the law. This is under a different set of circumstances. Paul says all things are lawful, but he is not under that burden of the law per se; he is free from it, yet he will not take advantage of it or make license of it, because the Holy Spirit now controls every facet of his life. So it should be with us. He will not be brought under the power of things the law forbids.
