Who profits from a divorce?
The lawyers are the only ones who really profit from a divorce. Everyone else involved gets hurt and comes into a place of devastation, but the lawyers can walk away smiling. This observation was used to illustrate why believers should not take disputes to worldly courts.
Les explains that the Corinthian believers were taking their disputes against fellow believers to the unjust courts rather than resolving them within the church body. He references a quote he thinks was from one of Charles Stanley's books, stating that whenever divorce comes into the picture, the only ones who really profit are the lawyers, while everyone else gets hurt and is devastated. Paul's instruction is that believers should not go to the world's lawyers and courts with their problems; they should keep such matters within the confines of the believers. Les acknowledges there may be times when one must go to the world's judicial system, but the primary principle is to avoid suing fellow believers before unbelievers.
