Why does divorce cause irreparable damage in marriage?

Divorce causes irreparable damage because God designed marriage as a one-flesh union that should never be separated. When a man and woman come together and become one flesh, tearing them apart does irreparable damage. Scripture says they shall be one flesh, and divorce does exactly that.

Les teaches that the Hebrew word indicates once a man and woman come together in marriage, they should never be separated without causing irreparable damage. He asks, 'Isn't that what divorce does?' He has taken calls from people across the country going through the awful distress of divorce, and he empathizes with them but does not envy them. This is exactly what God had in mind: when man and woman came together and became one flesh, to tear them apart is doing irreparable damage. God says they shall be one flesh. The context then describes the man and his wife as perfect, sinless, naked and unashamed, comfortable in God's presence, with a beautiful earth, perfect climate, no severe weather, and fellowship with their Creator.

Genesis 2:24

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
