Why are there so many horrible elements in divorce?
Horrible elements arise because civil law becomes part and parcel of a legal marriage. The law enters the picture, binding husband and wife until divorce or death, and it dictates what they can and cannot do, including with community property.
Les teaches that when a husband and wife are legally married, the law of the land is part and parcel of that marriage until it is dissolved by divorce or death. He says you cannot escape it. This, he explains, is what gives rise to so many horrible divorce elements: the law comes into the picture, and no matter what a couple tries to do with their community property, the law tells them what they can and cannot do. Paul uses this marriage relationship only as an illustration, speaking of the civil law of the land rather than the Mosaic law.
