What happens when a Christian keeps filling their life with material things?
According to the cup analogy, a believer is filled with the Holy Spirit at salvation, but filling that cup with material things displaces the Spirit. The more material things are added, the less room remains for the Spirit’s fullness, until the cup is full of material things instead.
Les teaches that the moment a person is saved, they are filled to the brim with the Holy Spirit, and that fullness is part of salvation—not something to work or look for. But God leaves within the believer’s control how much fullness is maintained or allowed to empty. Using a cup, Les likens the Holy Spirit to air: to fill the cup with air, water must be poured out. Likewise, as believers live in a world of allurements, temptations, and fleshly desires, they begin filling the cup with material things. Before long, the cup is full of the material, displacing the Spirit’s fullness.
