Why do Christians stop wanting the worldly things they used to enjoy?
Christians lose their appetite for former worldly pleasures because the Lord gives them insight that spiritual things last forever. They no longer find satisfaction in the old lifestyle; instead their heavenly position and spiritual blessings in Christ come to the forefront, while worldly enjoyments prove temporary and unable to endure.
Les explains that believers do not shun worldly things because they are missing them; the world may think they are, but they are not. Their appetite has changed. He illustrates this by telling a man he would be just as miserable in that man's saloon on Saturday night as the man would be in church on Sunday morning. The old attractions no longer appeal because the Lord has given enough insight that spiritual things are going to last forever, not merely for seventy years—and in fact it won't be that long. By contrast, the fast lane of entertainers and wealthy athletes cannot last; the body cannot take it, and by fifty they are old, their health is shot. For the believer, the end result is that the heavenly position comes to the fore: spiritual blessings in the heavenlies, seated in Christ. Les ties this to the Christian experience and to Paul's discussion in I Corinthians chapter 12.
