Where should believers center their devotion instead of on a man?
Believers should center their devotion on the Word of God and on Christ who brought us, not on a man. Loyalty belongs to Scripture and to Christ, not to pastors or charismatic personalities. Churches should not hang their hearts on human leaders, because that kind of attachment is misplaced and can cause division.
Les explains that the Corinthian problem was personalities: some believers adhered to Paul because he had brought them out of idolatry and immorality, while others followed Apollos because of his magnetism and charisma, and another group adhered to Peter. Paul himself did not draw people by appearance or speech; he gained converts strictly through the working of the Holy Spirit. Les warns that churches today can fall apart when a pastor leaves, showing loyalty to the man instead of to the Word of God and to the Christ whom they worship. Therefore believers should not put their eyes or hang their hearts on a man, but center on the Word of God and on Christ who brought us.
