Should we center our loyalty on a pastor or on the Word of God and Christ?

Loyalty should center on the Word of God and on Christ, not on a pastor or any man. Churches loyal to a man instead of the Word and Christ can fall apart when that pastor leaves. Believers should not hang their hearts on a man, but keep their focus on God's Word and the Christ who brought us.

Les explains that the Corinthian problem was not doctrinal but personalities. Some believers were attached to Paul because he had brought them out of idolatry and immorality; others were drawn to Apollos by his magnetism and charisma and said they would follow him. Les notes this still happens today: churches can totally fall apart when a pastor leaves. That is not right, because such a church has been loyal to the man instead of to the Word of God and the Christ whom they worship. So believers are told not to put their eyes or hang their hearts on a man, but to center on the Word of God and on the Christ who brought us. The context also mentions another group adhering to Peter.
