How do today's heavy thinkers and think tanks compare to the word of God?
Compared with the word of God, the world's heavy thinkers and think tanks are nothing but babble. They try to envision what will happen and how things are happening, yet the writers of Scripture knew it thousands of years ago. Human wisdom is no match.
Les explains that throughout this early part of 1 Corinthians, Paul constantly brings up the word “wisdom,” usually comparing man's wisdom with God's wisdom. Paul understood the emphasis on human wisdom because he had just been at Athens, the seat of philosophical thinking, where the Athenian philosophers called him a babbler. Les says it was really the other way around: Paul had the heavy stuff, while the philosophers had the babble. That situation is not much different today. The world's heavy thinkers and think tanks, compared to the word of God, are nothing but babble. They try to envision what is going to happen and how things are happening, but the writers of Scripture knew it thousands of years ago. Paul then came to Corinth, a city beset with idolatry, steeped in the mythological worship of gods and goddesses, and marked by gross immorality. Les notes we may think we are in a bad state today, but we are not yet as far as Corinth was, and into that setting came the apostle.
