How do today's great thinkers compare to the word of God?
Compared with the word of God, today's great thinkers and think tanks are nothing but babble. They attempt to envision what will happen and how events unfold, yet the writers of Scripture already knew these things thousands of years ago.
Les explains that throughout this early part of 1 Corinthians, Paul constantly brings up the word “wisdom,” usually in a comparison of man's wisdom with God's wisdom. Paul had just come from Athens, the very seat of philosophical thinking, where the Athenian philosophers called him a babbler. Les points out that it was really the other way around: Paul had the heavy stuff, and the philosophers had the babble. The same is true today. The world's heavy thinkers and think tanks, compared to the word of God, are nothing but babble. They try to envision what is going to happen and how things are happening, while the writers of Scripture knew it thousands of years ago. Paul then comes to Corinth, a city beset with idolatry, steeped in mythological worship, and marked by gross immorality.
