Can we apply the Gospels to ourselves even though Jesus spoke to Israel under the Law?

Yes, the Gospel accounts provide perfect applications for believers even though spoken to Israel under the Law. But we must be careful, because Paul says Old Testament things were written not for our doctrine; grace, salvation, the Body of Christ, and the Rapture are not found there.

Les teaches that throughout all the Gospel accounts, we can come in and see perfect applications, even though they were spoken to Israel under the Law. He uses salt as an example: He told the twelve, representing the nation of Israel, "You are the salt of the earth." But Israel rejected that role, so today believers are the salt of the earth. Les warns that we must be careful, because Paul says Old Testament things were written not for our doctrine. You won't find grace and salvation, the Body of Christ, or the Rapture back there. Yet Les still loves to teach Genesis, because it provides the foundation even for what grace-age believers believe. He also points to Ephesians 4 and the comfort of the Scriptures, and to David, who mourned his child but concluded, "I can't bring that child back, but I'll go to him."
