What was our spiritual condition before God before we were saved?

Before salvation, our spiritual condition before God was spiritually naked, with no hope of obtaining help from anywhere. Like a naked person caught in a predicament who cannot find clothes, we stood before God utterly exposed and helpless, unable to remedy our own state, hoping only for mercy.

Les explains that before salvation our spiritual condition was one of total exposure and helplessness. He uses the shocking statement that spiritually we had to stand before God stark naked, with no hope of getting help anywhere. He illustrates this with a naked person caught in a predicament: such a person does not go looking for a set of clothes but simply hopes for the best. Les says that is exactly where we were spiritually—we were naked before God. This highlights that in light of everything God has done on our behalf, we did nothing. He contrasts this with the believer's position: we have been put to death in the mind of God on the cross of Calvary; we died when Christ died, yet we are alive.
