What was our spiritual condition before God?
Our spiritual condition before God was one of stark nakedness, utterly exposed and helpless. We stood before Him with no hope of obtaining help from anywhere, having done nothing to remedy our state. We were spiritually naked before God, completely dependent on His mercy and provision.
Les teaches that spiritually we had to stand before God stark naked, with no hope of getting help from anywhere. He illustrates that a naked person caught in a predicament will not go looking for a set of clothes but will simply hope for the best. That is exactly where we were spiritually—naked before God. This condition is set in contrast to all that God has done on our behalf, while we did nothing. Though we died when Christ died, we are alive, and in light of God's mercies it is our duty, not a command, to present our bodies as a living sacrifice. Before God, then, we were utterly exposed, helpless, and without any means to cover ourselves.
