What is the promise of the kingly line from David to Christ in 2 Samuel 7?

The promise in 2 Samuel 7 is that God would set up David's own seed after him, establishing His kingdom and throne forever. This kingly line would run from David down to the coming of Christ the King. God would be His Father, and He would be God's Son, with chastening if iniquity occurred.

Les explains that in 2 Samuel 7:12-13, God promised David that his seed would proceed from his bowels—meaning his own Son—and that God would establish His kingdom. This Son would build a house for God's name, and God would establish the throne of His kingdom forever. Les points out this was the promise of the kingly line that would go all the way from David down to the coming of Christ the King. In verse 14, God says, "I will be His Father, and He shall be My Son." If He commits iniquity, God will chasten Him with the rod of men and with the stripes of the children of men. Les connects this to Israel's experience of constant discipline, as seen in the book of Judges, where the nation went up and down spiritually under righteous judges and then fell into sin, but God never gave up on them.

2 Samuel 7:12

And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.
