Where did idolatry and pagan religions originally begin?

Idolatry and pagan religions originally began at the Tower of Babel. After Babel, humanity's idolatrous roots spread into the Oriental religions and paganism. Romans 1:23 describes how they changed the glory of the incorruptible God into images of corruptible man, birds, beasts, and creeping things.

Les teaches that Romans chapter 1 takes us all the way back to the Tower of Babel, where all this junk really began and where the roots of the Oriental religions, idolatry, and paganism started. He points to Romans 1:23, where they changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man, birds, four-footed beasts, and creeping things. Les compares this to Egypt when Israel came out under Moses, noting that the plagues were directed against Egypt's gods, even the flies, frogs, and Nile. Because mankind became saturated with worship of man-made idols, God gave them up to uncleanness, judicially causing them to go deeper into sin and lower levels.
