What is God's promise to the nation of Israel in 2 Samuel 7:16?
God promised that David's house and kingdom would be established forever before Him, and David's throne would be established forever. This royal line would continue through history into eternity, ultimately bringing the King of kings and Lord of lords to Israel.
Les teaches that 2 Samuel 7:16 records God's promise to the nation of Israel: Thy house and thy kingdom shall be established ever before thee, thy throne shall be established forever. Earlier in the chapter, David was promised that from his loins would come a royal house, or royal family of kings, who would rule and reign over the little nation of Israel. Through that line of kings would one day come the King of kings. That was Christ, born of Mary with Joseph as His legal father, and both Mary and Joseph came down those royal family bloodlines of David and Solomon. In verses 14 and 15, God speaks of being a father and chastening with the rod of men, yet His mercy would not depart as it did from Saul. Then verse 16 gives the promise that the house, kingdom, and throne would be established forever. Les emphasizes that God does not lie and cannot lie. When God told David this royal family would go down through history and beyond history into eternity, that meant out of this royal family of David would come the King of kings and Lord of lords. He will come again to the nation of Israel, which is why they have to be in the Middle East at the time of His coming.
And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.
