What did God promise David in 2 Samuel 7?

God promised David that beginning with him would be a royal house and royal family, and that down through the ages that royal family would be the ancestors of the King. Jesus is presented as that King in the opening of the New Testament.

Les explains that the reference to 2 Samuel chapter 7 goes back in their studies. He asks what God promised David, then answers that beginning with David would be a royal house, a royal family, and down through the ages that royal family would be the ancestors of the King. This is why Joseph is addressed as "thou son of David"—to show that Jesus is in that royal family. In the opening part of the New Testament, all we understand is that the King has now made His appearance. Later it will be revealed that He is the Redeemer, and then further revelations. But for now, accept that He comes to be the King of Israel.
