Did I find God, or did God find me?
God is the seeker; man in his own desire will never seek God. A believer did not find salvation by themselves. God found you and brought you to the place where you believe. As with Lydia, God opened her heart, not Paul or herself.
Les teaches from John 3:19-21 that light has come into the world, but men love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come to it, lest his deeds be reproved. But he who believes the truth comes to the light, so his deeds may be made manifest that they are wrought in God. Les emphasizes that man in his own desire will never seek God; God is the seeker. He warns believers not to give themselves credit for having found salvation—no, God found them and brought them to the place where they believe. He illustrates this with Lydia, whose heart God opened, not Paul. He also recalls Peter's confession in Matthew 16, where Jesus asked who men say He is, and Peter answered, 'Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.'
