Les Feldick Bible Study

When did God first promise that the Messiah would come through a woman?

At the beginning, with Eve, God promised this when He spoke to the serpent, declaring the seed of the woman would bruise his head, and the serpent would bruise the seed's heel. The context calls this the first promise concerning Christ in the flesh.

Les explains that this is the first parcel of that promise and the first promise concerning Christ in the flesh. The seed of the woman, as Galatians explains, is Christ, and He is speaking to the serpent. Les notes that Christ bruised and defeated Satan at the cross, while the serpent caused the suffering of the cross and bruised the Redeemer's heel. Les also connects this to Matthew chapter 1 and the Davidic covenant, showing that through the woman of the human race would come the Messiah, beginning with Eve.

Genesis 3:15

And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
