What is the line of descent from Abraham to the twelve sons of Israel?
The covenant promise came to Abraham; Isaac was next in response, then Jacob, and out of Jacob came the twelve sons, including Joseph. Those twelve sons went down to Egypt because of grain, multiplied, and became the twelve tribes of Israel, later led by Moses and Joshua.
Les explains that after Abraham received the covenant promise that out of him would come a nation of people, the next person in response to that covenant promise was Isaac, the next one in response was Jacob, and then out of Jacob came the twelve sons, one of whom was Joseph. Because of Joseph, those twelve sons ended up down in Egypt because of the grain. While those twelve sons and their families were in Egypt, they exploded in population, and those twelve sons became the twelve tribes of Israel, which Moses led out through the wilderness experience and Joshua led into the land.
