How did the twelve sons become the twelve tribes of Israel?
Jacob's twelve sons went down into Egypt because of Joseph and the grain. While there with their families, they multiplied and exploded in population. Through that growth, those same twelve sons became the twelve tribes of Israel, which Moses later led out and Joshua led into the land.
Les explains that the nation of Israel traces back through the covenant promise given to Abraham, then to Isaac, then to Jacob. Out of Jacob came the twelve sons, one of whom was Joseph. Because of Joseph, those twelve sons ended up down in Egypt because of the grain. While the twelve sons and their families were in Egypt, they exploded in population, and those twelve sons became the twelve tribes of Israel. Moses led them out and through the wilderness experience, and Joshua led them into the land.
