What does it mean that believers are more than conquerors in Romans 8:37?

Being more than conquerors means victory does not come from believers' own resources or abilities. Christ Jesus alone makes them conquerors, and He becomes everything. It is all of God's grace, unmerited favor, not anything in them that merits favor. This victory rests in Christ Jesus.

Les explains that Romans 8:36 describes believers as sheep accounted for the slaughter, yet verse 37 declares that in all these things we are more than conquerors. This conquest is not based on what we have or on any ability we possess; what makes us conquerors is Christ Jesus, and He becomes everything. Les ties this to Colossians, where whatsoever you do in word or deed is to be done unto Him, and that is where we live and move. He stresses that there is nothing in us that can merit any favor with God; it is all His grace. Grace could not have happened without mercy, and since God poured out His mercy on Christ on the cross, we no longer have to cry for mercy. Now God can give grace, unmerited favor, which we do not deserve. Paul then goes on in Romans 8:38 to say he is persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, and Les turns to Ephesians 6:12.

Romans 8:36

As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

Romans 8:37

Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
