What makes believers more than conquerors in Romans 8:37?

Believers are more than conquerors not through anything they have or any ability of their own, but because of Christ Jesus. He becomes everything. There is nothing in them that merits favor with God; it is all of His grace, not human effort or worthiness.

Les explains that Romans 8:37 follows the thought of verse 36, where believers are counted as sheep for the slaughter, yet in all these things they are more than conquerors. He stresses that this is not based on what we have or any ability in ourselves; what makes us conquerors is Christ Jesus. Christ becomes everything, and believers live and move in Him. Les also emphasizes that nothing in us can merit any favor with God—it is all of His grace. That grace follows mercy, because God poured out His mercy on Christ at the cross, so now He can give grace, unmerited favor, which we do not deserve. Thus the believer’s victory is entirely grounded in Christ and God’s grace, not personal merit.
