If the least educated people can understand the Bible, what does that mean for everyone else?
If the least educated plowboys could comprehend the Scriptures, then anybody can. Bible understanding does not require high education or extensive theological training. God intends every believer to become a student of Scripture, learning to study it and rightly divide the Word of Truth, not merely read it.
Les points to the Reformer who wanted the printed Scriptures in the hands of every plowboy in England. Since plowboys were among the least educated in English society, their ability to comprehend Scripture proves that anybody can understand it. Les says you do not have to be highly educated or have a great theological education to comprehend the Scriptures. The Dark Ages came when the church pulled Scripture away from the common man and brought it into the monasteries, thinking only monks and the educated could discern God's Word. But that is not what God intends. He wants every believer to become a student, to study rather than just read, and to rightly divide the Word of Truth, which is what Paul meant when writing to Timothy.
