Why does the example of the plowboys show that anyone can understand the Scriptures?

The plowboys were among the least educated in English society, so if they could comprehend Scripture, then anyone can. Understanding does not require advanced education or theological training; God intends every person to study and learn Scripture, not restrict it to monks or the educated.

Les explains that one of the Reformers, as he was being burned at the stake, wanted the printed Scriptures in the hands of everybody in England, and specifically wanted the Word of God in the hands of every plowboy in England. Since the plowboys were probably the least educated part of English society, if they could comprehend the Scriptures, then anybody can. Les says he is of the same impression: you do not have to be highly educated, and you do not have to have a great theological education, to comprehend the Scriptures. He contrasts this with the Dark Ages, when the church became so powerful that it pulled the Scriptures away from the common man and brought them into the monasteries because they felt only the monks and the educated could discern the Word of God. But that is not what God intends. He wants every one of us to become students and to study, not just read, but learn how to study this Book. Les connects this to what Paul meant when he wrote to Timothy, that we are to study, to show ourselves approved unto God, and rightly dividing the Word of Truth.
