Why didn't God spare His Son if He could have?
God did not spare His Son because He had foreordained that Christ had to die for the sins of mankind. Though God could have stopped it, the cross was predetermined before anything was created, and everything rests on it. Scripture presents Christ's death, burial, and resurrection as the Gospel.
Les explains that it was not that God lost control. This was all predetermined before anything was ever created—that Christ would go to the cross—and everything rests on it. God could have spared His Son and put an end to all of it, but He did not, because He had foreordained that Christ had to die for the sins of mankind, and He did die. Les also warns that some presentations of how to be saved omit any word about the cross, His death, and His resurrection, thereby bypassing the Gospel. He stresses that the Gospel is that Christ died, was buried, and rose again, and people aren't hearing that anymore.
