Why did Jesus say the stones would cry out if the disciples kept quiet?

Jesus said the stones would cry out because all creation is aware of His coming and of His restoring everything as it was at the beginning. As Creator, He knows what stones are capable of doing. If the disciples kept quiet at the triumphal entry, creation itself would testify to His arrival.

Les explains that Jesus' statement rests on the truth that all creation is aware of His coming and of His restoring everything as it was at the beginning. At the triumphal entry in Luke 19, the crowds shouted Hosanna and laid palm fronds in His way. The Pharisees, shaken, told Jesus to rebuke His disciples. Jesus replied that if these should hold their peace, the stones would cry out. Les emphasizes that Jesus is the Creator and knows what the stones are capable of doing. He then points to Psalm 148 as saying it plainly, noting that when all creation sees the rapture of the believers, it knows only a little while remains until the curse is lifted, and it will enter the glorious dominion under Christ's rule and reign, with believers as joint heirs.

Luke 19:39
