Why does sharing the gospel seem to roll off some people like water off a duck's back?
Scripture explains that Satan has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so the light of the glorious gospel cannot shine into them. When believers try to enlighten such people, the message rolls off because they are spiritually blinded and see nothing to be gained, so they remain in darkness.
Les explains that this is exactly what we are up against when we try to enlighten people. We want to bring them into the same joy of salvation we enjoy, but it is just like water falling off a duck's back. Why? Because they are blinded by the powers of Satan; they see absolutely nothing to be gained, and consequently go on their way in total darkness. He contrasts this with Romans 8:2, where the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus frees us from the law of sin and death, giving a new outlook and hope for eternity. He also connects it to Romans 6:23, 'the wages of sin is death,' showing the bondage from which believers are freed.
In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
