Les Feldick Bible Study

Why is there no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus?

There is no condemnation because the believer has been justified by faith, not by works. Christ died, was buried, and rose again, and this was accomplished entirely as an act of God. We contributed nothing of our own energy or flesh; therefore security rests on God's work, not human striving.

Les explains that chapter 8 follows the struggle where the things a person wants to do are not done and the things that should not be done are done. Chapter 8 wraps up what was learned in the previous seven chapters. The “therefore” points back to being justified by faith: Christ died, was buried, and rose again, and all of it was accomplished as an act of God. We had nothing of our own energy and could do nothing in the flesh. Because faith is invisible and not worked at, the believer's security does not depend on striving or being careful enough to avoid losing it. Les notes that those who reject this security are left in perpetual insecurity, since no one can hang on by his own power.

Romans 8:1

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Why do some Christians reject the teaching that there is no condemnation for believers?

Many people who claim to be Christians cannot accept the security of "no condemnation"; they insist you must work and strive and be careful or you will lose your salvation.
