Les Feldick Bible Study

Why is there no condemnation for believers even though they still fail and do what they know they shouldn't?

Because those who believe are in Christ Jesus, and God has promised that there is now no condemnation despite their dilemma and failures. That standing comes by faith and faith alone in the Gospel, which is an act of God, not by human performance or works. Union with Christ, not personal perfection, is the requirement.

Les teaches that Romans 8:1 follows Paul’s discussion in Romans 7, where believers experience the dilemma of doing things they know they should not do. In spite of that dilemma and those failures, God has promised there is now no condemnation. The condition is being in Christ Jesus. No unbeliever is in Christ; a person may try to walk or behave like a Christian, but unless he is in Christ, he is not one. For those who are in Christ, that position is obtained by faith and faith alone in the Gospel, and it is an act of God. Les also notes that in Romans 8:2 the word “law” means a fact of life, not necessarily the Ten Commandments.

Romans 8:1

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

More Questions

Why do some Christians reject the teaching that there is no condemnation for believers?

Many people who claim to be Christians cannot accept the security of "no condemnation"; they insist you must work and strive and be careful or you will lose your salvation.

Why is there no condemnation for believers in Christ?

There is no condemnation for believers because they have been justified by faith and because Christ's death, burial, and resurrection were accomplished entirely by God, with no human energy or fleshly effort contributing to them.
