Do you need to clean up your life before God will save you?
No, you do not need to clean up your life before God will save you. Scripture teaches that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. God saves people exactly where they are, then performs the work of regeneration. He does the saving work, and He receives all the credit and glory.
Les explains that God does not expect people to straighten up and clean up their life before approaching Him for salvation. He notes that some say, 'If I can just clean up my life and get rid of this habit, then I'll get saved,' but that is not the way God works. God saves everybody just exactly where they are, and then He does the work of regeneration. We don't do it; He does it, because He wants all the credit and all the glory. This is why Scripture says God commended His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. The law later entered to show sin for what it really is, not to make us clean first.
