What must a person realize before God saves him?

Before God saves, a person must come to realize they are in need of salvation. Recognizing that need, they cry out to God, and He immediately responds to save. This realization of need triggers the call upon Him, as Romans 10 describes.

Les explains that the heart of the salvation message is confessing with the mouth the Lord Jesus and believing in the heart that God raised Him from the dead, resulting in salvation. However, to trigger this, a person must call upon Him. Les uses the analogy of a lifeguard who hears a feeble cry for help amid a noisy swimming pool. Likewise, God hears the sinner in need of salvation and immediately responds to save. But the person must first come to the place of realizing their need. When they cry out in need, God responds. This is the concept in Romans 10: while we believe Christ died and rose, God expects us to cry out on that basis for His saving power. Joel writes this under the aids of grace.
