Les Feldick Bible Study

Is reckoning yourself dead to sin automatic, or does the believer have to choose to do it?

Reckoning yourself dead to sin is not automatic; it is left to the believer’s free will. The word “reckon” means coming to a mental conclusion, and “let not” implies choice. Even as a believer, one must decide to keep old Adam in subjection and live spirit-filled rather than carnal.

Les teaches that “reckon” in verse 11 is not something commanded, demanded, or already done automatically. It means to come to a mental conclusion, and it is left with our free will as a place of decision, even as a believer. The believer must choose whether to live a spirit-filled life or a carnal, fleshly life. The next verse’s “let not” also implies choice, so the believer is left with the choice of not letting old Adam continue to reign in the mortal body. Many unhappy believers are miserable because old Adam is still controlling them, but he doesn’t have to.

Romans 6:11

Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
