What does it mean to be baptized into the body of Christ?
Being baptized into the body of Christ means the Holy Spirit totally engulfs every believer, placing them into Christ's one body. It is not water baptism but a spiritual work whereby all believers—Jew or Gentile, bond or free—are immersed into that body and partake of the Spirit.
Les explains that the Greek word baptizō means to be totally engulfed, as when a ship is sunk at sea. He notes that baptism does not always mean water; Israel was baptized unto Moses, meaning the nation was totally engulfed in Moses' leadership. In the same way, when believers are baptized into the body of Christ, they are totally engulfed, not just set on the edge. Les emphasizes that by one Spirit all believers—not just the most spiritual—are baptized into the one body, whether Jew or Gentile, bond or free, and all are made to drink or partake of that work of the Holy Spirit.
For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
