Can a good moral church member still be ungodly?

Yes. The term ungodly means without God, not necessarily morally degraded. A person may be good, even the best of church members, yet if they have never experienced God's saving grace, they remain ungodly because they are without God in their lives.

Les explains that ungodly does not mean a person must be down on skid row or have come to the end of themselves. The prefix un- simply means without, so these people are without God. They may be good people, the very epitome of society, or the best of church members, but if they have never experienced God's saving grace, they are ungodly because they are without God in their lives. Les notes that depravity before God can reach down and save him, and that God saves the down and outer, the up and outer, and everything in between. Just as Israel was helpless at the Red Sea and God opened the way, so before salvation people are without strength, without hope, and helpless, and God opens the way through His grace; in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
